How to record a Discord meeting
Discord has no built-in way to record voice channels. To record a meeting you need a bot that joins the channel, such as Meetcord: you add it to your server, type /join while you are in the voice channel and, when you finish, /leave. The bot keeps the audio and posts the minutes of the meeting in a thread.
Record a meeting step by step
- Add Meetcord to your server with the "Add to Discord" button. You need the Manage Server permission to invite it.
- Join the voice channel where the meeting will take place.
- Type /join in any text channel. Meetcord joins the voice channel, starts recording and opens a thread for that meeting named after its date and time.
- Talk as usual. The bot transcribes in batches while the meeting goes on.
- When you finish, type /leave. Meetcord leaves the channel and posts the summary, decisions, action items and transcript in the thread.
What exactly gets recorded
Discord sends each participant's audio on its own stream, and Meetcord stores it that way. That is why the transcript knows who said each sentence without guessing, which is not the case if you record the call with screen capture software, where every voice ends up mixed in a single track.
The audio can be played back later from the web dashboard, where every sentence of the transcript jumps to its moment in the recording. Whoever manages the server decides how long it is kept: not at all, 1 day, 7 days or 30 days, depending on the plan.
Letting participants know
While it records, Meetcord shows up in the voice channel as one more participant, with a [🔴REC] flag on its name, and leaves a recording notice in the voice channel chat and in the minutes channel. Anyone who joins once the meeting has started gets the notice too.
Even so, the rules on recording conversations differ from country to country. The sensible thing is to say at the start that the meeting is being recorded and give people the option not to take part.
Limits worth knowing
- The free plan includes 60 minutes a month and meetings of up to 30 minutes.
- Paid plans allow meetings of up to 8 hours straight.
- On reaching the limit, the bot stops recording and posts the minutes of what was recorded up to then.
- If everyone leaves and the bot is alone for 30 seconds, it closes the recording by itself.
Common questions
Can Discord record calls by itself?
No. Discord has no recording feature for voice channels or calls. You need a bot or external software.
Do I have to be in the voice channel to use /join?
By default, yes: the bot joins the channel you are in. You can also name another channel in the command itself, or set a usual voice channel for the server.
Who can see the recording?
Whoever can see, in Discord, the channel where the minutes were posted. If the channel is private, so are the minutes and their audio.
