How to transcribe a Discord voice channel
To transcribe a Discord voice channel, add a transcription bot such as Meetcord, type /join when you start and /leave when you finish. You will get the full transcript in a thread, with the name of whoever said each sentence and its timestamp, in the language that was spoken.
Transcribe a conversation step by step
- Add Meetcord to your Discord server.
- Join the voice channel and type /join in a text channel.
- If you want, set the meeting's language from the menu on the message /join leaves. Otherwise the bot detects it by itself.
- Type /leave when you finish. The transcript arrives in the meeting thread and on the web dashboard.
How it knows who is speaking
Software that transcribes a mixed recording has to work out who is speaking from the tone of voice, and gets it wrong when two people sound alike or talk over each other. Meetcord does not work it out: Discord delivers each person's audio on its own stream, so every sentence already arrives with its author.
The result is a transcript ordered in time, with each participant's Discord name and the minute and second of every contribution.
Languages
Meetcord transcribes more than 50 languages. By default it detects the language being spoken; on very short phrases it can confuse similar languages, so if your server always speaks the same one it is worth setting it.
- For the whole server: /config language, or the settings page on the web dashboard.
- For a single meeting: the language menu on the /join message. The change is noted in the transcript.
- The minutes are written in the language spoken the most during the meeting.
What you can do with the transcript
- Read it in that meeting's Discord thread, next to the summary.
- Open it on the web dashboard and click any sentence to hear that moment of the audio.
- Download it in Markdown on the plans that include export.
- Delete it whenever you want: whoever manages the server can remove the whole record, with its transcript and its audio.
Common questions
Is the transcript live?
The bot transcribes in batches while the meeting goes on, which is why the minutes arrive shortly after it ends. The full transcript is posted when you run /leave.
Can I transcribe a meeting where two languages are spoken?
Yes. With automatic detection every sentence is transcribed in the language it was said in, and the minutes come out in the one spoken the most.
What happens if the bot restarts in the middle of the meeting?
The transcript is saved while recording. After a restart, the bot posts what it had up to that moment and says so at the top of the minutes.
